Welcome to Derbyshire Canal Boat Tuition

Derbyshire Canal Boat Tuition is a friendly family run business operating between the 18th century historic Port of Shardlow, Swarkestone Lock and Willington, Derbyshire, that is fully qualified and insured to run the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) inland waterways Helmsman and Crew courses. The RYA is the recognised governing body for the boating leisure industry and a leading representative for the Inland waterways.

Your instructor Paul has spent over 50 years at sea, rivers and inland waterways and is a retired harbour and river pilot that holds a MCA Master unlimited certificate, but most importantly for you, holds the RYA Inland Waterways Instructor Certificate.

As our canal boat CORNERSTONE is a RYA Recognised Training Centre, we’ll be using the RYA instruction and teaching methods throughout the course to make it fun and enjoyable whilst we cover the syllabus.

Please note: Applicants must have the physical agility and strength requirements needed to walk around locks and across the lock gates, open several lock gates and operate the lock winding gear.

Our canal boat CORNERSTONE, is also our training centre thus reducing our overheads so we can keep our prices competitive.

RYA

Permits us to have a maximum of 3 students but here at DCBT, if requested we can do a couples booking at no extra charge.

Consultancy

Apart from teaching you we can also assist you with on site advice on the different canal boat styles before you decide to rent or purchase. The difference between learning to drive a narrowboat, a wide beam, and a cruiser to ensure it suits your training needs.
